LAGOS STEPS UP CAMPAIGN AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Thursday 15th October, 2015
Domestic Violence Must be eradicated
Perpetrators of Domestic and Sexual Violence will no longer find it easy to operate in Lagos state. This is the resolve of the Government of Lagos State and the participants of year 2015 Walk Against Domestic Violence which took place in Lagos on Thursday 15th October, 2015.
The awareness walk, organised by the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), is part of the week-long activities lined up to commemorate this year’s Domestic Violence Month. DSVRT is made up of top level representatives drawn from Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation; Office of the Public Defender; the Nigeria Police; Ministries of Health and Education; Office of Youth & Social Development; the Media and Civil Society Organisations involved in the fight against Sexual and Gender Based Violence crimes. The Team, which is being coordinated from the Office of the Attorney-General & Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State, was founded in September, 2014.

The year 2015 Walk Against Domestic Violence was flagged off by Honourable Adedamola Richard Kasunmu at Ikeja Bus Stop. Conducting the Flag-off ceremony this morning, Hon. Kasunmu, representing Ikeja Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly, expressed deep concern about the rising cases of Domestic and Sexual Violence in the state. Honourable Adedamola Richard Kasunmu later joined the team at the Governor’s Office. Speaking with reporters during the Flag-off ceremony, Hon.Kasunmu stated that “the effects of domestic and sexual violence especially on girls, women, youths, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups should be a source of worry to all right-thinking persons in the society. That is why we all need to play our parts in confronting this criminality with everything it takes and one the areas we need to improve on is the aspect of awareness. How do I mean? As far back as 2007, the Lagos State House of Assembly has enacted a law known as “Protection Against Domestic Violence”. Section 18 (g) i-ix of that Law listed 10 things as acts of Domestic Violence. They are:
(i) Physical abuse;
(ii) Sexual abuse, exploitation including but not limited to rape, incest and sexual assault;
(iii) Emotional, verbal and psychological abuse;

(iv) Hazardous attack including acid both with offensive or Poisonous substance
(v) Intimidation among others things”
 Now the law is there, but our people are not taking advantage of it because of low level of awareness and because people tend to see domestic violence as ‘family affair’ that does not need to be exposed. There is need for all arms of government form a synergy and tackle this problem ”.
Speaking further, Hon Kasunmu said “ Today’s event is about increasing our level of awareness on this issue and that is why it is important and I think we must commend the organisers”
Shortly after the flag-off, the hardworking Lawmaker took time off to join his colleagues in the House of Assembly for the day’s Plenary sitting.

Also at the event were, Executive Secretary, Ikeja Local Government, Hon. Dally Adeokun; Director of Public Relations, Ministry of Justice, Mrs Bola Akingbade; Director, Ministry of Justice, Mrs Tola Akinsanya; Coordinator, Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi; Mrs Monisola Niyi-Adewale of Citizens Right Office; Members of the Nigeria Teachers Union (NUT); Coordinator, Walk Against Rape, Mrs Esther Ijewere-Kalejaiye and other notable personalities and organisations.

Forming an impressive procession from the departure point under the fly over bridge at Ikeja Bus Stop, participants marched through Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja down to Allen Avenue Junction and then straight to the Governor’s office at Alausa with placards and banners bearing various messages. It is instructive to note that throughout the procession, there was a free-flow of traffic along the ever-busy Awolowo Way. This was made possible by the orderliness of the participants and the presence of LASTMA officials who accompanied the team.

The Walk terminated at the State House, Alausa Ikeja where the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs Boladele Dapo-Thomas received the participants on behalf of the Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode

VEILED JUBILATION IN OGUN STATE AS TRIBUNAL NULLIFIES KASHAMU’S ELECTION

Friday, October 9, 2015

Buruji Kashamu

 The verdict of the National and State Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital nullifying the Senatorial election of wanted cocaine Baron, Alhaji Buruji Kashamu this morning, has thrown a section of the state into wild jubilation.
Kashamu, controversial businessman and PDP stalwart, was the candidate of the then ruling party in the March 28, 2015 Senatorial Elections for Ogun East. Other candidates in the election include Dapo Abiodun of All Progressives Congress, APC, Adegbenga Kaka of the Segun Osoba-led Social Democratic Party (SDP) and six others. Kashamu was however controversially returned elected and declared winner of the election by the returning officer of the zone, Professor Babatunde Ikotun, after purportedly polling 99,540 votes ahead of eight other candidates.
In April 2015, however, the All Progressives Congress, APC, through its candidate, Dapo Abiodun, filed a petition accusing the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of manipulating the result in its favour during the collation.
Dapo Abiodun
 After six months of twists and turns in the case, the tribunal finally delivered its judgment this morning Friday 9th October, 2015 nullifying Kashamu’s Pyrrhic victory.
The Tribunal led by Justice Ebiowei Tobi cancelled units in 8 out 9 local government areas to invalidate the election of the People’s Democratic Party senator. It has also ordered a rerun in a whopping 110 polling units of the senatorial district. The re-run will take place within 90 days.
Shortly after the judgement in Abeokuta this morning, the Tribunal venue erupted in wild jubilation as supporters of the APC burst into ecstatic singing and dancing. The excitement later spread to other parts of the city.

AUDU-FALEKE TICKET IS AN UNBEATABLE COMBINATION ---Hon. Kasunmu

Lagos Tuesday 6th October, 2015
The governorship ticket of former Governor Abubakar Audu and his running mate, Hon. James Abiodun Faleke on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) for the forthcoming guber election in Kogi State has been described an indomitable combination that will beat any opponent hands down. Making this assertion shortly after the First Quarterly Town Hall Meeting organised by His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode in Abesan, a suburb of Ipaja, Lagos on Tuesday 6th October, 2015, Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu stated that, given the experience and popularity of ex-Gov. Audu and the political sagacity of Hon. Faleke, the combination of the duo will be difficult for the PDP or any party to beat in the fast-approaching November 21, 2015 Kogi Governorship poll. According to the cerebral Lawmaker representing Ikeja Constituency 02 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, “when it comes to astonishing political strategy that leaves the camp of opponents in disarray, Honourable Faleke is a master of the game. When you are also talking about five-star political leadership, Hon. Faleke is a front-liner. We all witnessed his impressive performance as Lagos Coordinator of Buhari-Osinbajo Presidential Campaign in the last General Elections and everyone can also attest to his super success as the Lawmaker representing Ikeja Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives since 2011”. Speaking further, Honourable Adedamola Richard Kasunmu, popularly known as ARK, said “the people of Kogi State are tired of the past years of PDP’s disastrous rule, which has brought nothing but frustration, abject poverty and abysmal failure to the people. The season of Change has come and God has sent the agents of Change to Kogi people in persons of Prince Audu and Hon. Faleke”. By the special grace of God, Kogi will be liberated come November 21”

Ambode of Lagos State, Hon.Kasunmu described the initiative as a “brilliant concept that will certainly bring good governance closer the people. Only a genuinely compassionate and a listening leader can do such. You have seen the turn-out and you have heard what His Excellency has said, it is a new dawn for the state and you can see that truly ‘Lagos is coming' ", Kasunmu said.
During the Town Hall Meeting themed, ``Community Inclusion in Governance’’, His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode entertained various questions and comments from the people and responded appropriately to the satisfaction of the audience. The Governor promised to be accountable for revenue generation and expenditure of the state. He also said that the meeting would be rotated around the three senatorial districts of the state and seized the opportunity to highlight some of the achievements of his administration in the areas of Education, health, security, employment, fianance and others .
