LADI BALOGUN EMERGES YOUNG GLOBAL LEADER

Ladi Baolgun's rating as an emerging global business leader was confirmed again recently when he was honoured with the prestigious This Day Newspaper's Young Global Champions award. Yesterday in the ancient city of IBADAN, Oyo State, i paid a visit to a friend who was hospitalized as a result of injuries sustained in an auto crash. During the visit, i was confronted with a frightening scenario. Three young men were rushed into hospital's emergency centre with their badly mutilated body drenched in fresh blood. Checks later revealed that the guys were political thugs who got attacked with machete in the head during a clash between their party and the supporters of the opposition party in the state.
As the 2011 elections got underway, every right thinking Nigerian should feel seriously worried that those in charge of security of lives and properties in Nigeria do not appear to be prepared to provide a lasting solution to the nagging problems of violence and general insecurity in the land. And i strongly believe that the solution to violence, brigandage, assassination and other vices in Nigeria's political system may remain elusive until these people saddled with the responsibility of maintaining law and order wake up from their slumber and do what they are paid to do.Some people would argue that they are trying their best, but it is obvious that their best is not just enough. Take for instance various cases of political violence that took place in the country between 2003and 2007 electioneering.Investigation to most of these cases are never concluded. After making few arrests (of mostly innocent people) shortly after the incident, nobody ever gets to hear about the progress made on such investigations anymore. In most cases, the investigators go the 'extra mile' of declaring some 'suspects' wanted. And even at that, nothing is achieved. For instance after a series of political violence and gruesome murders that took place in Nigeria around 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007, some folks were declared wanted by the authorities. Some of those declared wanted in connection with those violent clashes include notable political figures like Sir Bosun Agodo and Chief Segun Awolo. Others include , Hon.Temitope John Derby (a close associate of former Lagos Senatorial aspirant, Otunba Segun Awolowo and the late Funso Williams). there are also others like, Semiu Dayo Okondo, Goke Olatunji and many more. In most cases, these political personalities, like in the case of Hon. Temitope John Derby, are declared wanted mainlly as a result of sheer political witch-hunt and persecution. Up till now, the authorities are yet to get a clue about the real masterminds of these violence neither have they been able to track down the whereabouts of those political players declared wanted. There is no evidence also that any meaningful attempt is being made to do justice to the family of most of the victims. As another election approaches...May God Help Nigeria.

The Nigerian media community lost yet another illustrious member yesterday. Mr. Soji Adegbesan, the award-winning Photojournalist who worked with Punch newspaper died in a fatal motor accident on his way from Ilorin, Kwara state where he had gone to cover an event for Punch. He was travelling in a public commercial bus when the tragic accident, which reportedly claimed several other lives, happened.

Very hardworking, creative and free-minded, the industry and the entire high society will surely miss him. Adieu Soji Adegbesan.

WHERE ARE THESE POLITICIANS NOW?

Any keen observer of the Nigerian political scene in the last few years will easily notice that things are changing gradually. Unlike in the past, the present political terrain lacks men and women of colour and this accounts for the lull in the political arena currently. The General election is coming up next year 2011 and yet there is noting on the ground in terms of political activities to suggest that a major election is approaching. Most political pundits in the land have attributed this to the exodus of certain political players whose participation in the process naturally add verve and colour to Nigeria's political landscape. Some of these notable politicians are currently either outside the country on self-imposed exile as a result of political persecution in the hands of the ruthless ruling class or are not just interested in the process this time because of their not-too-pleasant experiences the last time. For instance, politicians like Semiu Dayo Okondo, Goke Olatunji, Hon. Temitope John Derby(the associate of PDP stalwart Otunba Segun Awolowo and the Late PDP Lagos governorship candidate, Eng Funso Williams), Sir Bosun Agodo, Ogbuefi Alex Chijoke, Emeka Offor, Tanko Yussuf and many others are believed to be presently outside the country because of the fear of being persecuted by the ruthless hawks in power. Well, as the next election approaches, it is our hope that those running the show of power in Nigeria will be more tolerant and open up the political space in the interest of the masses.In the mean time, let us wish President Umaru Musa Yaradua a speedy recovery. At last, the much-awaited wedding between Bolaji Fashola, the captivating cousin of Lagos state governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, and her heartthrob, Olumide Isimi comes up next weekend. According to the program of events sourced from the invites currently in circulation within the high society in Lagos, the Engagement and the Nikkah take place on Saturday January 23, 2009. The introduction ceremony had taken place in August last year. A top events manager, who was contracted to handle the planning is currently pulling all the stops to ensure Bolaji and Olumide have a befitting nuptial. An elaborate society reception is expected to follow immediately after the Nikka and from the look of things the wedding promises to be superb.

Otunba (Mrs) Nike Yusuf, the woman behind the wave-making Golden Triangle Private School in Alagbado, Lagos celebrated her 59th birthday recently. Though the ceremony was not very loud, yet it was classy and well-attended as most of her friends came from far and near to rejoice with her. Prominent among those in attendance were Pastor Sam Foli and his beautiful wife, Abosede, Deaconess Aboyade –Cole, Mrs Bisi Kuye, Mrs Dupe Fasawe, Mrs Doyin Ben-Cash, Mrs Funmi Olukoya, Mrs Ronke Savage,Mrs Bola Amodu and many others including the staff and management of Golden Triangle Schools. In a chat with metrogist-nigeria during the event, Otunba Nike Yusuf expressed her "appreciation to the Most High God for all His goodness, mercy and blessing over her and her household”. The ceremony took place in the premises of her late husband, Air Marshal Nureni Yusuf, the former Chief of Air Staff in Alagbado last December.

LATE MRS ESTHER OLUSOLA OSUNSADE, (ELDER SISTER OF OTUNBA MIKE ADENUGA) BURIED IN LAGOS

Chief Mrs Esther Olusola Osunsade was the elder sister of Otunba Mike Adenuga, the Globacom boss.. She died in March after a brief illness at the age of 70..the 4-day funeral service in her hounour started in Ibadan, Nigeria, (where she spent most of her life) and culminated in an elaborate ceremony in Lagos. Popularly known as Aunty Olu, she was the first of the Adenuga siblings. She was buried in specially prepared vault at the Vaults and Gardens, Lagos while the reception took place at British International School, Lekki-Lagos. The remains of late Mrs. Abiodun Kumuyi, wife of Deeper Life Christian Ministry's General Supretendent, Pastor Williams Folorunsho Kumuyi, was committed to mother earth on Friday at the Church's headquarters in Ayobo, Ipaja-Lagos. Aged 57, she died after a brief illness. She is survived by 2 sons, John and Jerry who are said to be currently schooling in America..Below are some of the pictures captured at the burial ceremony by SOLA FOLOWOSELE on Friday 24th April, 2009.

LEGENDARY BANKER, OTUNBA SUBOMI BALOGUN CLOCKS 75

The founder and Chairman of the FIRST CITY FINANCIAL GROUP, Otunba Subomi Balogun,GCON, attained the age of 75 recently. to celebrate the man who singlehandedly built of one Africa's biggest financial institution, an elaborate society party was put together in his honour. The event for Balogun's 75th birthday started with a well-attended book launch on Thur March 5th, at the Muson Centre in Lagos while the second phase started with an inspiring church service at the Cathedral Church of Christ Marina which was followed immediately by a colourful reception at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, all on Monday 9th March, 2009..The celebrant is one of the few Nigerian elites who have touched so many lives with their various acts of philantropy. When he clocked 70 in 2004, he donated a multimillion Naira Paediatric centre purposely built to offer free medicare to children and the less privileged in the society. INSIDE EX-GOV ORJI KALU'S COUNTRY HOME IN IGBERE, ABIA STATE

Quite a number of A-list events took place during my “break-in-transmission” . Unfortunately, I won’t be able to post most of them in order not to bore you with ‘stale’ news. However, there is this particular one that took place few hours to the end of 2008 which i felt i should not dump in the 2008 archive.

It was the “FORMAL RETIREMENT CEREMONY(Igboto Nma) OF EX-GOVERNOR ORJI KALU’S MUM, MADAM EUNICE ORJI KALU FROM POLITICS”. The very colourful event held inside the ex-Gov’s expansive country home in IGBERE, BENDE LGA, ABIA STATE on 30th Dec, 2008. In attendance were top personalities and power brokers like ex-military ruler Gen Ibrahim Babangida(retd), Dep. Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, Govs Theodore Orji of Abia state, Ikedi Ohakim of Imo state, Dr. Babangida Aliyu of Niger, Lyel Imoke of Cross River, Adams Oshiomole of Edo, Information Minister Dora Akunyili (who represented President Yaradua), Foreign Affairs Minister Ojo Madueke, Sen Jubril Aminu, ex-Gov Bafarawa and a host of others.

SHORT GIST FROM THE EVENT

WELCOME TO 'CAMP NEYA'
Really, I’m yet to find the right set of adjectives that accurately describe the awesome structures erected by Ex-Gov Orji Uzor Kalu in his place of birth, the sleepy town of Igbere, in the Southeastern state of Abia, Nigeria. Popularly known as ‘CAMP NEYA’, it comprises of several units of eye-popping buildings and other exotic structures which stand elegantly on a massive piece of land that is large enough to host a town of its own. As you meander your way towards the main entrance of Camp Neya, what attracts your attention is the lavish array of well-nurtured flowers and a carpet of plush green grasses that cover the entire surface of the premises. A tour through some parts of the Camp would later convince you that the owner of this place is a national politician of no mean status. This is because, almost all the buildings and structures were named after one national or international leader. For instance, there was Nnamdi Azikiwe House, Gen Abdulsalam Abubarkar Square, Gen, Ibrahim Babangida Hall, Bill Clinton Fountain, and several others. Apart from these, there was also this particular sprawling edifice which contains 37 rooms with each named each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Interestingly, Camp Neya was said to have been completed 100% long before Kalu became the Governor of Abia in 1999.

WHO IS NEYA?
Neya is Dr Orji Uzor Kalu’s first child. Very pretty, cool-headed and sociable, the camp was named after her to confirm her status as the heiress apparent to the gigantic Orji Uzor Kalu dynasty. 17 year old Neya played the role of the Chief Hostess during her beloved grandmother’s ceremony and really, she did it well. She is a student of an exclusive institution in the United States.
However, talk is rife in the streets of Igbere that Neya has already been espoused to a young Igbere chap and both of them are currently being groomed in the states.

'IGBOTO NMA'
‘Igboto Nma’ or 'Mgboma' is the Igbo word for ‘retirement’.. 70-something year old Madam Eunice retired after 61 years of active politicking. Indeed, there is no doubt about the fact that she has seen it all and she looked so radiant and fulfilled throughout the ceremony.

A TALE OF TWO BABANGIDAS
In Nigeria today, there are two prominent personalities among several others who bear the name BABANGIDA: former Nigerian Military President, Gen, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), and the incumbent governor of Niger state, Dr Babangida Aliyu.. Both are from Niger state and have engaged each other in a cold war for quite a while over who controls the state’s political machinery. The duo extended their acrimony to the Orji Kalu's event, as they tactically avoided each other throughout the event.

ADAM OSHIOMOLE CHANGES STLYE
Well, those who still expect Edo Governor, Comrade Oshiomole to stick to his usual Labour Khaki style now that he is a governor might be slightly disappointed by this. The peoples' governor has changed his style. He stormed the Orji Kalu party in a smooth, smart and well designed French suit.

BETWEEN TEE MAC AND GODDY ANABOR
Factional President of PMAN, Tee Mac Omatsola, came to the event in company with controversial international businessman, Goddy Anabor. I’m still trying to figure out what the two have in common.

IS ALL WELL BETWEEN ORJI KALU AND T.A. ORJI?
Gov Theodore Orji is the incumbent governor of Abia state. He won the governorship election from prison last year April to succeed Orji Uzor Kalu on the platform of the Peolple’s Progressive Alliance (PPA). Going by Nigeria's Political culture the latter is suppose to be the former's godfather but recently, gist has it that the duo have fallen apart and as if to confirm the rumour spreading in town, the two hardly interacted throughout the event .

LIFE AT THE COUNTRYSIDE
For the first time in the last couple of months, an opportunity to escape from Lagos finally came last weekend and folks; I grabbed it with two hands! It was the 2nd Coronation Anniversary and Thanksgiving of HIS ROYAL MAJESTY, OBA (DR) EBENEZER AKINTUNDE AKINYEMI, THE ESELU of ISELU KINGDOM, AKAOSU 1. I met the respected monarch through another influential Oba about this time last year and since then we have maintained a cordial relationship. At 30-something, he is probably the youngest king in Ogun state today. Thus when the anniversary was approaching, Kabiyesi sent a personal invite to me requesting my presence at the event, so I had no choice other than to honour the royal invitation, though I had two other celebrity events to attend almost at the same time in Lagos.
Now, Iselu is a typical Nigeria rural settlement located very close to the Nigeria-Benin border after a town called Oja-Odan off Ilaro (The Polytechnic town) in Yewa South Local government of Ogun State. At Oja-Odan, there is a large and very busy market tagged “OJA-ODAN INTERNATIONAL MARKET”. I was surprised at the level and pace of activities in this market but my findings later show that, being very close to the border, the market serves as a transits point for cross-border smugglers who get their stuff into Nigeria after “settling” the Customs officials at thier numerous checkpoints along the roads. .
One major thing that caught my attention at the market as I took a walk through the market was the entrepreneurship of the rural women. Virtually everyone was busy with her “market”: from the ones selling pepper to the plantain sellers and the one waiting for customers to buy her charcoal. I was told that the history of the market dates back to over 100 years. As I was busy observing the market activities and trying to study the mentality of the people there, a fleet of glittering vehicles zoomed pass *viaam..viaaam..viaaaam*..there was a Hummer, one Infinity, a Benz ML450 FORMATIC and others. They were heading towards the event. This scenario reminded me once again of the wide gulf between the rich and the poor in Nigeria. Im mot sure whether the total annual income of all these market women put together could buy a side mirror of one of the ‘jeeps’ that just whizzed pass, yet in their own way, they work as hard as anyone but there is hardly anything to show for it. No thanks to our lopsided social system. It’s a sad irony!

From the market I moved to the venue of the event proper where a large number of guests were already seated under a giant canopy.(while I was doing my ‘market survey’ the event was already underway). Among the guests were high-ranking functionaries of Ogun state government, dignitaries from Lagos, Abuja and other places. It was quite an interesting occasion. Some of those who bagged chieftaincy include Chief (Mrs) Tokunbo Balogun, UNILEVER PLC’s Field Sales Manager, who was honoured with the title “YEYEMESHO OF ISELU KINGDOM”, Chief Olanrewaju Saheed Baba, THE AROLE OF ISELU..and a host of others .

MC OLUOMO AS A STAR ATTRACTION
Of all the guests, the one that caught my attention was this guy called Musiliu Olusanya a.k.a MC OLUOMO. He is the 'Lord Mayor' of all the Motor Parks in ever-busy Oshodi axis of Lagos and he’s also the Treasurer of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). The guy drove into the venue in an eye-popping Hummer SUV in company with a large number of hangers-on. He came with his newest wife, Sikiratu Sindodo,(A Yoruba actress)..Most of the village youth were seen posing for pictures with his HUMMER..the guy became stupendously wealthy just collecting motor park fees.na wa o!

NOLLYWOOD STARS CONVERGE AT PA RUNSEWE’S BURIAL

It was another gathering of celebrities last Friday (17th Oct, 2008) in Lagos as notable personalities in the Nigerian showbiz industry converged to pay their last respect to the late PA BANKOLE RUNSEWE. Venue was the NPA SPORTS GROUND, off Bode Thomas st, Surulere-Lagos and in attendance were Nollywood divas and blokes like Shan George, Franca Brown, Bimbo Akintola, Ayo Adesanya and her husband, Goriola Hassan, Ace comedian Ali Baba, Bob-Manuel Udokwu, Kanayo O Kanayo, Larry Kold-Sweat and others.

ABOUT THE DECEASED
The late old man, Pa Bankole Runsewe, was a retired civil servant and an accomplished businessman during his life time. He’s the father of OTUNBA SEGUN RUNSEWE, the indefatigable DIRTECTOR-GENERAL of NIGERIA TOURISM DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (NTDC), Abuja. He died at the age of 80.

WHY THE ARTISTES WERE THERE
It is not everyday you get to see Nigerian artistes attending Owambe parties of this nature but in this particular one, they were there in large numbers. As expected, not a few people were pleasantly surprised. Well, let me quickly tell you that the NTDC, led by Otunba Runsewe recognizes Nollywood as a potentially huge tourist attraction in the country. The Corporation therefore has a working relationship with the movie practitioners. And of course, many of them have benefited generously from the NTDC largesse as a result of this working relationship. This explains their impressive turnout at the event.

NOW, THE GIST

AGE BECKONS ON SHAN GEORGE
Shan George was supposed to be the coordinator-in-chief of her fellow artistes attending the event. She played the role for a while but after welcoming a few artistes she quietly arranged with one of the usherettes to stand-in for her while she took the backside to sneak out to God-knows-where. She didn’t return until the tail end of the event when everything was almost over. Anyway, that is not even the main gist here, what caught my attention was the fact that the beautiful Shan George of old is now aging rapidly. Though she still maintains her smart physique but you could see signs of old age telling easily on her face. I hope all is well with this ‘serial lover’ of Nollywood, because by my reckoning Shan is supposed to be around 40. PIX: Shan George before she disappeared

ALI BABA TURNS PAPARRAZZI
Nigeria’s undisputed king of comedy, Ali Baba, was all over the place with his digital SLR camera snapping anything on sight. The way he operated you would think he’s covering the event for Ovation Magazine. He sat in the midst of other artistes and treated them to several rounds of ‘free’ jokes. BOB-MANUEL UDOKWU, THE MASTER ENTERTAINER
This suave actor is one guy after the heart of many. This is because Bob knows his art! During the party, SIR SHINA PETERS (SSP), the Afro-Juju singer who was performing on stage called Bob-Manuel to the podium to and come sing (probably with the intention of making a joke out of his voice). When Bob got to the rostrum and collected the mic from SSP, he did not only sing well, he actually sang better than SSP the owner, commanding the band just like SSP himself. This attracted a loud round of applause from the crowd. Infact, so good was Bob-Manuel on the mic that he forced SSP to commit another grammatical gaffe as SSP said “Haha! Believe me, veteran actress Franca Brown is now ‘50cl OROBO’. ( 50cl is the parlance for excess fat in Nigeria, it was adapted from the size of the biggest Pepsi drink which is 50cl a.k.a Orobo). When I saw her at the party, I had to take a second glance to actually ascertain that she’s the one. She’s now robust and fleshy like a typical “Iya Monsura”. Though there was also the presence of a few Igbo group led by Igwe(Dr) Martin Ezeh, The Idu 2 of Igbo-Ukwu, Anambra state. When all Nollywood stars were invited to the rostrum for recognition by Bisi Olatilo the anchorman, Kanayo O Kanayo was given the mic to speak on their behalf after Larry Koldsweat had spoken. To the surprise of many, KOK made his speech in Igbo, claiming that the ‘Holy Ghost’ instructed him to speak Igbo. I was surprised but when I took a look at the table where KOK stood up from, I saw 31/2 bottles of Gulder and a half-empty bottle of Moet. I now perceived that it must have been ‘Gulder Ghost’ that actually instructed him.

Nwude and some of his 'partners' were convicted and sentenced to prison in 2005 by the EFCC (the Nigerian anti-corruption agency) for perpetrating the biggest bank heist in history. AKI 'N' PAW-PAW'S NARROW ESCAPE
Pint-size Nigerian actors, Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme of the AKI & PAW-PAW fame had a feel of their "street credibility" recently when they were nearly mobbed by a crowd of their fans in the premises of a pentecostal church in Ogba area of Lagos.
The two "vertically-challenged" comic actors had gone to church tom attend a thanksgiving service of one of their friends who happens to be a memeber of the church.Immediately they made their way into church's auditorium, they were usshered to sit in a seat reserved for them in the front. As if theyn were beings from another planet, their enterance into the church almost brought the service to a halt as almost all the members of the congregation scrambed to catch a glimpse of the august visitors.
After the service, it took the combined effort of the police escorts who accompanied them to rescue Aki 'n' Paw-Paw from the mammoth crowd which had gathered outside thy church to see them live at a close range. As the crowd surged forward to touch the the two babyish-looking old men, their escorts quickly spirited them into their waiting Toyota Camry LE car.. It was a narrow escape..

After several weeks of ‘hibernating’ as a result of what was initially a ‘minor’ injury on my right leg, I’m glad to be partially back to blogville. While I was away, I got more enlightened about the ‘real’ realities of life vis-à-vis all these our ‘gra-gra’, hustle and bustle, restlessness and all that... I also discovered the significance of having the whole component of your being, including your legs, intact. Above all, I rediscovered the awesome power in the Word of God in a fresher dimension. I really give all the Glory to BABA. OCT 1ST: NIGHT OF A THOUSAND LAUGH TAKES CENTRE STAGE

Showbiz impresario Opa Williams hits town again with the 2008 edition of his “Night of A Thousand Laugh”. Just like the Green & White Groove, Opa Williams show takes place 1st October, only that the venue is Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos between 3pm and 9pm. Both established and upcoming comedians are expected to add pep to the event. Industry watchers are however waiting patiently to see which of the two will attract the most crowd.

Over 2000 youth from across Naija are expected to participate in the carnival–like event. OCT 4TH: HEART-OF-GOLD HOSPICE BOSS REMEMBERS LATE MUM

The place to be on Saturday 4th October, 2008 is the venue of the 40th remembrance thanksgiving service and reception of the late Mrs Cecilia Ajibola Binuyo, mother of Mrs Laja Adedoyin, the proprietor of HEART-OF-GOLD Hospice Lagos. Church service comes up by 10am at Eagles Height Church, Surulere, Lagos while the reception holds at the Sickle cell centre, Idi-Araba Mushin, Lagos. Heart-of-Gold Hospice is a leading orphanage in Lagos. OCT 5TH: REMEMBRANCE PARTY FOR LATE SOLOMON AYOKU

Barring any last-minute changes, an elaborate remembrance party put together by the children and family of the late Chief Solomon Ayoku, is scheduled to take place on Sunday 5th October. The late Ayoku, who died last year at 69, was the owner of Golden Gate Restaurant, Ikoyi. He also had a chain of other businesses like the popular Eko Casino at Eko Hotel and Suites. The party coincides with his 70th birthday and a lot of front-row socialites are expected to grace the occasion. Venue and entertainer are yet to be confirmed.

TINU CHUKWURAH BECOMES A MOTHER AFTER 11 YEARS

It was celebration galore in the household of Tayo and Tinu Chukwurah on Monday 8th September, 2008 when friends, family and well-wishers gathered for the christening of their new baby girl.

The baby, their first, came after 11 good years of waiting; she was named Naomi Ifeoluwa Chukwurah. Tayo is the younger brother of veteran Nigerian actress, Clarion Chukwurah. Expectedly, Clarion and other Nollywood stars were present at the ceremony which was kept low because of the loud dedication ceremony which comes up later. RENOWNED BROADCASTER, YINKA CRAIG PASSES ON

Veteran sports journalist and ace broadcaster, Olayinka Babasanya Craig, has passed on in a United States of America hospital. Craig died this morning, at Mayo Clinic, in Minnesota, USA, after a protracted battle with cancer. His lymphatic system was particularly implicated in the complication that eventually killed the very jovial broadcaster. The late Craig is survived by a wife and three children. The news of his death was announced by his son, Dr. David Olamide Craig, who said his father passed on early today in the United States of America after he succumbed to cancer. “It is with a heavy heart, and joy at God’s perfect will that I announce the passing on to Glory of my father, teacher, mentor and friend, Mr. Olayinka Babasanya Craig, who went to be with the Lord at 6.00am this morning at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota,” David said in a statement posted on the family’s website. JAMIU MKO-ABIOLA SURVIVES DEADLY CANCER
Alhaji Jamiu, one of the sons of the late Bashorun MKO Abiola, “the posthumous winner of June 12, 1993 Presidential elections” in Nigeria, has reasons to thank Allah recently. Heard that Jamiu, who lost both parents (his mum is the late Kudirat Abiola) to the June 12 struggle almost died as a result of a disease diagnosed as cancer in his body. But thank God for His mercy, the guy survived after a series of surgical operations both in Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. He is now alive and kicking.

That was the day the who-is-who in the entire Lagos social and business circuit converged on The Balmoral Event Centre in Lagos , to honour her on her 50th birthday. Before the Sunday event, an Ismalic prayer session had earlier held in her family home in Gbagada area of Lagos . At the prayer session were top clerics from the Lagos Island branch of NASFAT, family members like her husband, Alhaji Raji, Prince Ade Adetela, the celebrant’s children and others. But at the main society party which took place on Sunday July 20, 2008, virtually everybody who is somebody in the society was there. Montai, Sade Alesh, Kudi Ayoola, Ibrahim Borokini and so many others in fact the list is endless. On the bandstand were King Sunny Ade (KSA) and his band. And as expected, everyone had more than enough to eat and drink as KSA treated guests to several of his famous tunes. Apart from some minor skirmishes however, the party very grand and lavish and many who attended it will not forget the memories quickly.

REMEMBERING KAYODE FAYEMI AND TUNDE AYILARAN

I was alone, dry and somewhat forlorn last night in my bed…and thoughts of certain events of the past kept flashing through my subliminal. This morning I feel compelled to just ‘blog’ them out. come with me.
Within the first three months of year last year (2007), I lost two of the most precious individuals in my life: KAYODE FAYEMI (alias Chicago) and TUNDE VICTOR AYILARAN. Kayode Fayemi was the guy who converted me single-handed from a disillusioned part-time teacher and wannabe society photographer to a journalist. In the summer of 2003 when I joined his editorial crew at THE CELEBRITY MAGAZINE in Lagos, he gave me the first opportunity to express myself in writing through the pages of the then fledging journal and since then there has been no looking back for me on the job. And because he was one hell of a boss who won’t ever accept your second best, he was always on my neck, expectedly that kept me on my toes.
But in the sunny afternoon of January 10, 2007, the unexpected happened! Kay had been an asthmatic for years and had been managing to survive on medication and inhalers. But on that fateful day he had an ‘attack’, he wasn’t with his inhaler and before help could come he died!
As at the time of his death, he was the Executive Editor of Wole Arisekola’s Street Journal. He was also contributing to Global Excellence Magazine and PM News using various pen names. Kayode died at the age of 41 and left behind 5 all-girl children, a widow and an aged father.( Note: Dr. Kayode Fayemi who contested for Ekiti State governorship last year and Kayode ‘Chicago’ Fayemi were mere name-sakes and not related but I am sure they met at least once before Chicago ‘went home’)
Tunde Ayilaran on the other hand was my cousin. We grew up together in Idao / Ijero Ekiti,(Ekiti State,Nigeria). While growing up, we had the ambition of joining the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and becoming senior military officers, we were banking on using the influence of our big uncle, Air Marshal Akin Dada then, but somehow it didn’t work out so we faced other directions in life. We later came to live together for years at Iya-Ijebu’s house at Oke-Ira, Ogba-Lagos. We separated when his girlfriend, Yemi got pregnant and moved in with us early 1998.
As it were, Tunde happened to be the closest to me out of all the members of my family (both immediate and extended). He was the only one who knew all my little secrets, he knew all my ups and down, he knew my entire struggle too. I often used him as the yardstick to measure my speed in life. He was always there to chide me frankly and express his displeasure with me over anything I left undone in my usual carefree manner. He would have been the ideal person to be my witness on the day of my ‘celebration’ because he alone knew how tough the journey had been. But then, one fateful morning in the month of March, 2007, he went to the farm and never returned on his legs.
Five years earlier,(in 2002), he had relocated from Lagos to Ekiti when he lost his job as the store clerk of Specomill Nigeria Plc in Ikeja. When he got to Ekiti, he had wanted to contest for the councillorship seat of our ward in Ijero Ekiti on the platform of the then Alliance for Democracy (AD) but it didn’t work out as anticipated. While building his political profile and waiting patiently for his time therefore, he got involved in timber business in the locality to keep body and soul together. He had a group of boys working with him and things were going on fairly well. Then one cloudy morning in the ides of March, 2007, he went to inspect his workers who were busy felling trees for him on father’s farm in Ara-Ekiti: out of the blues, one of the trees swung off trajectory on its way down hit Tunde on the head. He died instantly!
He left behind two lovely daughters, and unknown to us, his widow was already pregnant with their third child before he died. So, few months after the tragic incident, Yemi gave birth to a cute baby boy who, as expected was christened “BABATUNDE” (meaning the father has returned).
It’s over a year now that these things happened, yet it’s like yesterday and each time I remember I feel like giving up everything. I feel like not living again. But I MUST LIVE and I MUST SUCCEED, so that what the duo lived for could be kept alive. Adieu Chicago: fare thee well Tunero

Recently, the Nigerian National Assembly passed into law a bill prohibiting the act of “spraying” the Naira (the Nigerian currency) at parties. The apex law making body also went further to recommend a jail term for offenders. But trust Nigerians for their ability to circumvent any law that stands in their way, an appropriate ‘solution’ has been found to this law. In stead of spaying the Naira, people have now resorted to spraying American Dollars and other foreign currencies, which are easily converted at the numerous ‘black markets’ in Lagos. Mr. Demola Seriki is the current Minister of State for Agric and Water Resources in Nigeria but I think he is in the wrong Ministry because many people believe “MINISTER OF WOMEN AFFAIRS & ENJOYMENT” would have been a more befitting portfolio. Nigerian veteran actress Clarion Chukwurah recently mobilized other showbiz personalities to identify with the less-privileged children in Nigeria..The event tagged “2008 ENTERTAINERS STAR TREK FOR THE LESS-PRIVILEGED CHILDREN”, saw the Clarion, Jimmy Jatt,Emeka Ike, Christy Essien-Igbokwe, Emma Edokpayi, Felix Duke, Tinu Chukwrah, and other prominent Nigerians visiting various Homes in Lagos. Some of the Homes visited include Olusoye Compensatory Centre, Ilupeju, JWC, Mushin, Modupe Cole, Yaba and Heritage Children Home, Anthony. Apart from the entertainers, other notable personalities who were part of the event include: Chief (Mrs) Aduni Bankole, Hon. Before the emergence of celebrity journals in Nigeria, news reporting was basically about government and government officials alone. The practice of journalism too appeared to be somehow restricted to four basic areas: politics, sports, showbiz/entertainment and human interest. And because of this obvious imbalance, the public hardly got to read about individuals who are not government officials, no matter how successful they are in their chosen fields. However all these began to change with the advent of journals like Prime People, Vintage, Today’s Choice, Climax, Fame, to mention just a few, which started beaming the searchlight on the hitherto unreported private lives of notable personalities in our society.
Though all these publications which were weekly then, had since packed up as a result of the uncertainty in Nigeria’s business climate, yet their invaluable contributions to what is now known as society journalism would remain unforgettable. For it was through them that the general public started to read stories like “Jennifer Madike Arrested for Drug”, “The messy love-life of Florence Ita-Giwa”, How Sonny Kuku’s Marriage Hit the Rocks”, “How Mr X got drunk and fell into gutter at Femi Otedola’s party”.“This and that in husband snatching mess”…and several other happenstances, which were no-go areas to the then mainstream newspapers. That, perhaps was how what is now known as society reporting evolved and became an indispensable part of journalism in Nigeria.Today, even most of our hitherto holier-than – thou and highly elitist dailies are now featuring more of society and “junk” than the so-called Soft-sells
In the beginning of the soft-sell industry, we had the Funmi Coker- Onitas, Moji Danisa – Jemegbes, Femi Akintude – Johnsons, Kunle Bakares, Mayor Akinpelus and others.
however, apart from Kunle Bakare and Mayor Akinpelu who are now publishers of their own magazines (Encomium and Global Excellence) respectively, the others have gone under. And quite ironically their absence is hardly being felt in the industry, no thanks to people like Mr Seye kehinde (SK) the hardworking publishers of Nigeira’s hottest soft sell, CITY PEOPLE Since its inception in 1996, City People weekly has done tremendously well in the area of society coverage. As a matter of fact the widely –read magazine has created (or unveiled, if you like) more celebrites than any other media. follwoing closely are Encomium, Global Excellence First Weekly and News of People in that order.
Nevertheless, the story of how far how society reporting has fared in Nigeria will not be complete without acknowledging the contributions of some present crop of razor – sharp reporters who have performed creditably and make society reporting more vibrant, competitive and robust.I am referring to people like Kemi Akinyemi Deputy Editor, City People. She probably pioneered the now popular style of reporting high society parties in the short-short gist format. An alumnus of OAU – Ife, Kemi’s writing style is quite impressive and unique. Her column ON THE PARTY CIRCUIT is always a readers’ delight. Unfortunately most of the priceless works of this gifted reporter are hidden in the hard copies of City People. For reasons best known to Mr. S.K., City People has refused to go on-line. Other worthy society writers in this class are Kemi Dayo-Aiyetan (Punch) Kunle Rasheed (Nation) Tunde Moshood (Famous Enquirer), Lanre Alfred (Thisday), Gbenga Asabe (Mirror), Abiola Aloba (Encomium). so popular is Aloba that, any shop you enter either on Allen, Ogunsanya or Island, what they would most likely ask you is ‘do you know Biola Aloba?’ Others are Niyi Tabiti, (the master blogger at Gistmaster.com.) Kayode Olanshile (Encomium), Funso Akinwale (First weekly), Gbenga Bada (First weekly) and several others. Lastly we should not forget the contributions of Kayode Fayemi (1965 – 2007) too; He was a damn good society reporter. He is late but his works live on. May his soul rest in peace, adieu CHICAGO!
